Director of Development
Job Description and Characteristics
The director of development is an integral member of the strategic team that both guides and ensures the
museum’s future. Working closely with the executive director, board of trustees and senior staff of the Armory,
this position is responsible for developing and implementing plans to raise the funds required to achieve our goals.
These responsibilities encompass galvanizing supporters, building membership, researching and preparing grants
for funds from government, private and public entities.
The individual must be experienced, accomplished, and self-motivating. A collegial manner and hands-on work
ethic are critical. A passion for museums, if not actually for arms and armor, is essential.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with executive director to plan and implement fundraising efforts
- Provide research, support and guidance to board and director on acquisition of major gifts for both capital campaign and regular operations
- Spearhead corporate gifts/membership effort
- Manage membership operations for growth (currently half of one staff person runs)
- Create new membership groups to attract higher donations and participation
- Manage annual fund and other fundraising outreach efforts
- Assume responsibility for grant efforts: research, schedule, write and/or manage grant writing process working with curatorial and educational staff, as well as occasional consultants, as appropriate. Monitor grant-funded programs and issue timely and thorough reports as required
- Build and maintain fundraising database
- Plan and implement regular fundraising events, working with committees as appropriate
- Attend all museum sponsored events and plan development opportunities around them
- Work closely with marketing manager to ensure maximum draw and impact of programs and initiatives
- Provide accurate monthly reports regarding all efforts and results for director and board
Reports To: Executive Director
Qualifications
- A minimum of five years of increasing responsibility in a fundraising department of a non-profit institution, with demonstrable history of success
- Adept at use of fundraising databases
- Excellent writing skills
- Comfortable with public speaking
- Organized, multi-tasker
- Bachelor’s degree, at minimum
