Higgins Armory Museum

Arms & Armor Around The World

Less well known than our European arms and armor are our interesting examples from other continents.

Warriors throughout the world have worn armor for protection, to intimidate the enemy, to assert their status, and to identify themselves. All armor and arms share common characteristics, but they also express the culture that produced them through the use of local materials and artistic styles.

Arms and armor evoke the heroic history and traditions of a people, but also embody advanced ideas: armorers and weapon makers have long been technological innovators, and many inventions resulted from military advances.

Here we invite you to view examples of armor and weapons from Africa, Asia and America. This photo shows a close-up view of a shirt of mail armor, made in Turkey or Persia during the seventeenth or eighteenth century. Each of the tens of thousands of rings has this decoration, and was hand-riveted to its neighbor, time-consuming labor that made this mail shirt a high-status possession.
