School of Swordplay

Have you ever wondered what it is like to wield the knightly longsword or the musketeer's deadly rapier? At the Higgins Academy of the Sword you will receive expert instruction in rapier, longsword, and dueling sabre, as well as the classical forms of modern fencing weapons. We invite you to join a growing community of men and women exploring the art, science, and spirit of the sword.

This ongoing class, taught by internationally recognized swordsman and fencing historian Ken Mondschein, offers a safe, progressive system of instruction, building overall fitness and coordination as you learn living swordplay traditions handed down from the days when a person's life might depend on their skill with a blade.

Classes are held on an ongoing basis Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm and, beginning June 19, Saturday mornings from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm. Tuition for a set of eight classes is $180 ($150 for Museum members); all classes must be taken within the space of two months. Gift certificates and discounts for three-month blocks of classes are also available.

To enroll, please contact Rhonda Houle at the Higgins Education Department via e-mail at higgins@higgins.org or by telephone at (508) 853-6015 x20.

The class is open to age 16 and up. No equipment is required. Please wear comfortable athletic clothes with long pants. Low-top sneakers are preferable. After you have signed up for a class, please bring the Class Waiver Form with you to your first session. These classes are somewhat strenuous in nature, involving aerobic and anaerobic exercise. If you have a preexisting illness, injury, or other condition, please inform us and also consult your physician.
