Icelanders in the Viking Age: The People of the Sagas

by William R. Short
The Sagas of Icelanders are enduring and entertaining stories from Viking-age Iceland and are filled with love and romance, battles and feuds, comedy and tragedy. Yet modern readers are not familiar with the people of the sagas, their lives, and the times in which they lived, so the stories make no sense to modern readers. This book introduces the modern reader to the daily lives and material culture of the Viking-age Icelanders of the sagas. Topics covered include religion, law, social customs, the settlement of disputes, and major milestones in the lives of these people. Illustrated with maps and photographs. Paperback. 283 pages. $35.00

Paperback. 128 pages. $14.95

Fencing: A Renaissance Treatise

Agrippa's treatise is the fundamental text of Western swordsmanship. This is a work that should be on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the history, practice, or teaching of fencing. Includes reproductions of the 67 original engravings. Paperback. 234 pages. $22.00

Using a variety of available sources, including medieval martial arts treatises, and copiously illustrated with images of historical artifacts, battle sites, and demonstrations of modern replicas of Viking weapons, the author and his colleagues at Hurstwic (a Viking-age living history organization) and at the Higgins Armory Sword Guild have reconstructed the combat techniques of the Viking age and what is known about the defensive and offensive weapons of the time in general.
