The Museum offers a variety of fee-based training courses and workshops, which are open to the general public and are taught by Museum instructors, including: one-hour workshops; multi-day classes; and open-ended classes. Please find our must current offerings detailed below.

Knight Training Workshops

February 21, 22, or 23   12:30 pm - 1:15 pm

Learn how knights fought visor-to-visor on the battlefield. In this 45-minute hands-on workshop you will sample the martial arts training of the medieval knight with such weapons as the poleax, dagger, and the knightly longsword. 
 
Cost: $10. Class is open to age 14 and up, or age 10 if accompanied by a participating parent. Space is limited. No experience is needed and all equipment is supplied. Workshop participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing with long pants and athletic footgear. Introduction to Viking Combat Class

February 25, March 3, March 10, and March 17   1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Were your Viking raids unsuccessful last summer? Were you frozen out by the Frost Giants in your last battle?  Do you need to improve your Viking combat skills?  If so, join us as we learn to fight like some of medieval Europe's most fearsome warriors: the Vikings.

Medieval Combat with Joan d’Arc Workshop

March 3   12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Explore how one maid from Orleans changed the face of Europe for centuries. In this 45-minute hands-on workshop you will sample the martial arts training of the medieval knight with such weapons as the warhammer, dagger, and the knightly longsword.

Elizabethan Rapier and Dagger Workshop

March 10   12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

“I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too. “ Best an Elizabethan gentleman at his own game as you wield these elegant and deadly weapons with the precision of Elizabeth herself.

Celtic Warrior Women Workshop

Don’t mess with Boudicca! Raise your Celtic sword and hurl your spear against the might of Rome as you explore the ferocity of Celtic warrior women.

Introduction to the Knightly Art of Battle Class

March 18, 25, and April 1  1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Explore the knightly martial arts of 15th century fencing master, Fiore dei Liberi  as interpreted in his treatise, The Flower of Battle.  Ranging from advanced grappling techniques to expert skill with a longsword, this class consists of three two-hour sessions held on three successive Sundays.
 
No experience is required and all needed equipment is supplied. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothes, and athletic footgear. Participants must be 15 years or older.  Cost: $75, $60 for museum members.  Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 12 students. Introduction to the Medieval Longsword Class

March 24, 31, and April 7   12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

This course is designed to teach the basic concepts, techniques, and training for the hand-and-a-half sword in the German tradition, as used from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. 
 
No experience is required and all needed equipment is supplied. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothes, and athletic footgear. Participants must be 15 years or older.  Cost: $75, $60 for museum members.  Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 12 students. Bows to Broadswords!  The Arms of Robin Hood Workshop

April 21   12:00 pm – 12:45 pm

How would you fare defending Sherwood against the Sheriff of Nottingham’s men? In this 1-hour workshop you will try your hand at the quarterstaff, the single-handed broadsword, and the sword and shield combination used by Robin’s yeoman outlaws.

Historical Combat Symposium: Fiore dei Liberi

April 28   9:30 am - 3:30 pm

The Higgins Armory Museum's world-class historical combat program invites researchers and practitioners from around New England to explore the knightly martial arts of 15th century fencing master, Fiore dei Liberi.  Dr. Ken Mondschein will offer a special book signing of his Fiore examination, The Knightly Art of Battle, published in conjunction with the Getty Museum.  Join other European martial enthusiasts for a day of lectures, hands-on workshops, and roundtable discussions. Presenters include Dr. Jeffrey L. Forgeng, author of The Art of Combat: A German Martial Arts Treatise of 1570 by Joachim Meyer and Dr. Kenneth Mondschein, author of Fencing: A Renaissance Treatise by Camillo Agrippa
 
Participants must be 15 years or older.  Cost: $75, $60 for museum members. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 12 students. No experience is needed and all equipment is supplied. Jedi Lightsaber Initiation Workshop

May 12   12:30 pm – 1:15 pm, 1:30 pm – 2:15 pm, and 2:30 pm – 3:15 pm

The way of the Jedi, easy is it not. To master the lightsaber, many years of practice it takes. For those not attuned to the Force, a few limbs can they lose. Thankfully, at the Higgins Armory Museum, safe practice lightsabers we have developed. Come to learn the basic lightsaber guards, strikes, and parries you will. Perhaps a Force-sensitive you are?
