The Higgins Armory Sword Guild studies, demonstrates, and teaches martial arts techniques of the Middle Ages and Renaissance at the Higgins Armory Museum. Working from original treatises of the period, the Sword Guild recreates combat arts ranging from knightly armored combat to the Renaissance rapier and dagger, with additional study of forms as diverse as Viking axe and American Civil War saber.
The Guild meets informally on the first, third, and fifth Saturday of each month, beginning at 12 noon, at Higgins Armory Museum. The practice room and practice equipment are available at this time for the use of Guild members under the supervision of a Guild instructor, but formal training is not necessarily provided. Students are expected to be self-directed and to work collegially.
Guild members must be current museum members and are required to pass a safety test administered by one of the Higgins instructors. A $50 monthly fee covers the cost of the practice gear, which must be regularly replaced.
